TOOLS OF THE TRADE

In the digital era, all trades seem to be losing their craftsmen. From machinists who could create products from a block of metal with incredible accuracy to photographers who actually worked with light and contrast, not Photoshop or post-production techniques, these artists are an endangered species. The lighting field is no different. The use of pen and ink has been replaced by AutoCAD and now Revit. Each are tools to communicate our designs and to assist the contractors in sharing our vision. I am afraid that this skill is being lost as many students and young designers may not have been taught how line weight is just as informative as the shape of the objects.
