I am greasing the wheels on my Cessna, and since this is the first time for me I was wondering if I am missing any shortcuts? It would seem some sort of injection needle could get fresh grease into the bearings without taking everything apart. Actually you want to take everything apart so that all the parts can be inspected properly. The wheel assembly takes a beating, and wheel pants can cover up all sorts of damage. In fact, even retractables can have what should be obvious damage missed unless you take things apart, and carefully check things over. It gives you a good chance to inspect associated areas such as brake pads, brake lines, etc. As an example, while greasing my wheel bearings in my Bonanza, when I took the brake caliper apart I found the relatively new pads (installed by someone else) had broken in half, probably by an overzealous installation on those delicate rivets. This could have let the pad or pads fall out giving me one wheel brakes.
