High quality RF cables and connectors are exceedingly important in proper avionics performance. Unfortunately, junk components abound as well as do similar sounding, but incorrect component choices. Cable descriptive nomenclature is very specific so don't just buy straight RG-58 coax or something that sounds "about right," even if it may have the required 50 ohm impedance. Generally, you will not find the right components except at specialty shops catering to aircraft needs. Computer stores and electronics catalogs are not the right place either. They have the wrong (but similar sounding) cables for our needs. Do not use RG-59-this is for TV and other uses, but definitely not aviation. Even the impedance is different. And while RG-174 cable is enticingly thin and light, stay away from it as well, even though the impedance is right. This stuff is for very short runs and only works acceptably for reception.
