The ISO 12988-1 method for determining the carboxy reactivityrnof anodes has widespread use in the aluminium industry. In therntest an anode core sample is exposed to CO2 at 960℃ for 7 hours.rnThe relative amount remaining sample and accumulated dust isrnthen measured. Visually, some samples show distinct selectivernreactivity, but there is currently no volumetric quantification ofrnthe depth distribution of this selective reactivity (except for therntotal volume from sample weight loss and dust produced).rnTo address this, an apparatus and a method were developed tornquantify the surface topography of the tested samples. The methodrnis based on automatically taking a picture-series of a back-lightedrnsample rotated in small increments using a computer controlledrnmotor. A computer program then applies image analysis to thernsample profile in the pictures to create a 3D reconstruction of thernsurface. The reactivity depth distribution data can then berncompared to anode properties.
