Profitability of smelters strongly depends on cells performance;rntherefore efforts are dedicated into increasing production capacity,rnreducing energy consumption, shifting from raw materialrnproviders, testing new anode or cathode designs, and so on. Tornsuccessfully accomplish these changes, as well as the necessaryrnadjustments on pot operations, companies must be capable ofrndeveloping control and supervisory systems to handle suchrnchallenges. Friendly human machine interface satisfyingrninformation handling requirements from cell operators is alsornneeded, so strict monitoring of cells performance can be easilyrnperformed on real time. To fulfill these targets, CVG-Venalumrndeveloped an aluminum reduction pot control and supervisoryrnintegrated system (VEN-PCSIS). The central control unit of VENPCSISrnis based on a PC-104 standard board, and the supervisoryrnsystem runs on free-software web technology. Results of VENPCSISrnduring the trial period overpowered existing systems;rnhence CVG-Venalum management decided replacing former cellrncontrol and supervisory systems with the VEN-PCSIS.
