Aluminum smelter design requires an in-depth knowledge ofrnsmelter operations, system architecture and integration ofrnengineering disciplines supplemented by high level processrnmodeling and dynamic simulation of the customer / supplierrninteractions between sub-processes.rnThis paper outlines an approach for improving plantrnconfigurations by applying Safety by Design and LeanrnManufacturing Methods to achieve a safe and efficient plantrndesign that delivers value over the entire life cycle of the plant,rnfrom early project definition, through execution and beyondrnoperational start-up. Design steps used to develop the improvedrnlayout include activities such as: listing and specifyingrnmovements of People, Products and Materials between Customerrnand Supplier connections, defining work design, identifying andrnquantifying traffic-related hazards, developing and comparingrnalternative solutions that offer a safe and efficient road network,rnand traffic scheduling for vehicles and pedestrians throughout thernSmelter.rnTo demonstrate the methodology, various examples from typicalrnPlant Traffic Models are presented.
