In aluminium production plants, studiesrnhave proven that coatings used in safety pitsrnduring direct chill casting operations preventrnmolten metal explosions. Safety pit coatingsrnare applied to any substrate that can comerninto contact with any molten aluminiumrnmetal at the casting station.rnUpon repeated exposures the coating surfacernsacrifices itself upon contact with moltenrnmetal to prevent an explosion fromrnoccurring. Eventually, the bare substratern(e.g., concrete, steel, stainless steel) isrnexposed through the coating surface. Furtherrnstudies have shown that a bare spot as smallrnas 4 sq. inches (25.4 sq. cm) in the safety pitrncoating surface can be an ignition source forrna molten metal explosion.rnRepair of the damaged coating surface isrntime-consuming and commonly affectsrnproduction. Recent introduction of safety pitrncoating repair kits now enable the quickrnrepair of damaged coating surfaces andrneffectively minimize and in most instancesrneliminate any disruption in production.
