Over several decades, calcined petroleum coke producers and thernaluminum industry have been using various techniques such asrnVibrated Bulk Density (VBD), Mercury Intrusion Porosimetryrn(MIP), and Mercury Apparent Density to predict the porosity ofrncalcined petroleum coke. Better knowledge of the coke porosityrnallows a more accurate estimation of coke quality and pitchrndemand for fabricating anodes of optimum performance. Industryrnhas had limited success in accurately predicting porosity using thernexisting VBD methods. Direct measurement of porosity by MIP isrnan alternative way to measure porosity accurately. Currently therernis limited correlation between VBD and MIP. Any improvementsrnto the VBD test method should demonstrate improved correlationrnto the results obtained from MIP.rnThis paper covers the historical and traditional approach to predictrncalcined coke porosity, correlation study of VBD test method andrnporosity by MIP, and input to the development of superior testrnmethods to meet industry requirements.
