American Paper Mills 1690-1832: A Directory of the Paper Trade with Notes on Products, Watermarks, Distribution Methods, and Manufacturing Techniques

Early America had problems with indigenous paper. John Dunlap issued the first printing of the Declaration of Independence on imported Dutch papers, some of them bearing the watermark of the English royal cipher, while senators sometimes sent out letters written on paper marked by the king's insignia. But by 1832-the terminal date of American Paper Mills-the republic's paper industry was thriving, and could supply nearly all markets, from local one-vat mills providing cheap, coarse paper to the county store, to large mills serving major industrial centres demanding increasing quantities of newsprint. Only a few luxury papers, such as drawing paper, still had to be imported. This book, the fruit of forty years' research and detailing 509 mills, charts the story of this process, and does so wonderfully, as well as serving its primary purpose as a work of reference.
