IDENTIFICATION OF PAUL EBER AS AN OWNER AND READER OF VESALIUS'S DE HUMANI CORPORIS FABRICA

THE LIBRARY OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS and Surgeons of Glasgow recently received a request to contribute to a census being carried out by Dr Daniel Margocsy of Hunter College, City University of New York, of the 1543 and 1555 folio editions and the 1543 Epitome of Andreas Vesalius' De bumani corporis fabrica. In preparing our response, we uncovered a number of interesting bibliographical features in both the provenance and the binding of the College's copy of the 1543 edition of the Fabrica. Not a great deal was already known about the history of the College Library's copy, and it was not included in a 1984 census of the first edition, so we were very keen not to pass up this opportunity to research and promote one of the key items in the College's collections.
