摘要

Librarians looking for an increased connection with the profession have traditionally gotten involved with associations. They become American Library Association (ALA) members, join a division or round table, perhaps volunteer for a committee. They take part in their state association, attend state conferences, perhaps present a poster session or table talk. They side with special-interest groups (for systems librarians, youth services librarians, independent information professionals) and speak up. Currently, though, the perception of a lagging job market, depressed salaries, and the exodus to nontraditional positions require that our associations prove their continued worth and relevance. New grads cannot be blamed for asking, "What's in it for me?"
