摘要

The hallmark of any great civilization is that it values and pre-serves its heritage. That the United States has done this in abundance is evident in its system of national parks that celebrate and foster American culture and natural history. Since the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, the number of U.S. national parks has grown to over 50, of which 13 have been designated World Heritage sites by the United Nations. (The National Park Service also oversees well over 300 national memorials, battlefields, lakeshores, and state parks.) From the frosted mountains of Glacier Bay to the extensive subterranean networks of Mammoth Cave, America's national parks offer a cornucopia of experiences that meet the diverse needs of a wide range of visitors.
