Bill Ptacek needs neither praise nor publicity from me. He has directed the King County Library System (KCLS) in the state of Washington for nearly 16 years. Before that he ran libraries in Idaho Falls and Louisville, KY. With him at the helm, KCLS has become one of the great library systems in America, the greatest by a number of measures, especially for strong community leadership. Ptacek has been active on King County's Legislative Planning Committee and the King County Governance Commission, among many other local groups. He also participates in professional organizations like the Public Library Association (PLA). In 2000 he received PLA's Charles Robinson Award for innovative change.
