The Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), in a national survey, have found that there's an enormous need to fund public library construction around the country, with 40 percent of existing library buildings in fair or poor condition, about 16 million square feet of new space planned, and about nine million square feet of library space expected to be renovated-if the money appears. The wish list would require $10 billion in funding, so COSLA is planning to work with the American Library Association Washington Office to seek federal support.
