Kock (founder, Elm Recovery Project, Univ. of Guelph, Ontario) died in 2005, and this book was completed by colleagues as a tribute to Kock's life. Kock intended that his book not only pass on his knowledge but "inspire the gathering and growing of seeds" as a means of restoring and preserving the environment. The result is a journey that takes readers from finding and gathering seeds of trees to planting them and supporting early growth. Each chapter is clearly written and contains numerous black-and-white illustrations. The sixth chapter spans almost 200 pages and is an encyclopedic listing of trees. The book also includes four appendixes, a listing of invasive species (to be distinguished from native trees), a seed dispersal calendar, a seed treatment guide, and a listing for further readings, as well as a collection of color photos. Kock's passion for the environment and trees shines through, and this makes the book not only a rich and detailed resource for gardening enthusiasts at all levels but also a fitting tribute. Recommended for all public and academic libraries with horticultural collections.
