On May 28, Google announced its latest play to reinvent "communication and collaboration on the web" by integrating email, social networking, instant messaging, and document collaboration into a single threaded message interface called a Wave. It is an impressive update to the 40-year-old email protocol, says LJ Digital Libraries blogger Roy Tennant, but not everyone may be so eager to be carried away by this latest trend:rn"Until now, we've mostly been able to manage [social media] to our own desires. If you didn't want to blog, no one was going to hold a gun to your head. If you preferred not to Facebook, your friends might miss you, but so be it. If you chose not to use instant messaging, your peeps could still call you up on the phone. And if you didn't think the world would be improved by your no-more-than-140-character witticisms, then no worries. Twitter would live without your participation.
