Both scholarly and accessible, this history of dictionaries in English (as well as bilingual/multilingual dictionaries) is divided into two volumes: Volume 1 describes general-purpose dictionaries in 16 chapters, each written by a lexicographer or a linguist and arranged chronologically from the medieval period to the launch of the electronic version of the venerable Oxford English Dictionary. Running in length from 20 to 30 pages, the chapters describe the historical period of the dictionaries under review, highlight important titles, and provide examples from the works. Volume 2 covers specialized dictionaries and is arranged thernsame way as Volume 1. Subjects covered there include thesauri, scientific and technical dictionaries, dictionaries of names, and usage dictionaries.
