In this memoir, Harvey (If You Were with Me Everything Would Be All Right) describes his repressive Catholic upbringing, his parents' abusive relationship, and his mother's refusal to accept his homosexuality. He covers his awkward first sexual experience with a man, his closeted life as a teacher, and the politically correct bubble of a school in Cambridge, MA, where he finally worked up the courage to come out. He meets Bruce, whose ex-wife and two daughters the new couple struggle to integrate into their lives. He and Bruce plan a wedding, fretting over the details and their ever-shifting legal status, while dealing with Bruce's daughter's depression. Harvey also recounts his participation in the battle for gay marriage in Massachusetts.
