When we first meet Ashley, she is an angry teenager, on her way to spend the summer with her grandparents, "somewhere in the middle of the country." From that beginning, viewers might sense that this film is like so many others-but it's not. Ashley uses the time to bond with her Native American grandparents while she also unearths a secret that influences her life and brings the family closer. Director Simes wrote the screenplay from his play Run, which deals with fetal alcohol syndrome disease (FASD). While FASD plays an important part in this drama, it is the family's hidden history that is most fascinating.
