This full-length monograph accompanies the current retrospective exhibition of work by Chinese American painter, collagist, and installation artist Hung Liu at the Oakland Museum of Art. Born in China in 1948, Liu was sent to the countryside for "reeducation" during the Cultural Revolution and later taught fine art in Beijing. The author is best known in California, where she has lived since emigrating in 1984 to study in San Diego with Alan Kaprow. Artist Ai Weiwei has praised Liu's complex personal history and sensitivity to the immigrant experience. Liu's subject matter and sensibility focus on images from historical Chinese experiences juxtaposed with objects symbolizing Chinese immigration to the United States, such as green cards and fortune cookies. In addition to fine full-page reproductions of works by Liu, the catalog includes six scholarly essays that discuss her personal history, artistic intentions, and career.
