Actor O'Nan (The Dry Land) makes his directorial and screenwriting debuts with this quirky indie comedy about a struggling, heartbroken folk singer-songwriter who is cajoled by an eccentric stranger and fellow musician (Michael Weston) into joining forces and trekking across America to compete in a California battle of the bands. Along the way, they pick up a mysterious manager (Arielle Krebbel) whose intentions may not be what they seem. This unlikely trio's journey is rife with encounters and characters that will be familiar to fans of the indie comedy genre. Though the road-movie structure has been done many times before, and with better results, the film's fun cameos, entertaining musical performances, and surprisingly and appealingly serious undercurrent make the style seem somewhat fresh, despite blatantly obvious nods to successes such as Little Miss Sunshine, Flight of the Conchords, and, especially, Fully Grown Men. Extras include two throwaway short films featuring O'Nan and Weston, a fun behind-the-scenes featurette, and an informative Q&A with the actors and filmmakers. VERDICT O'Nan's auspicious entry into the increasingly crowded indie comedy genre should appeal to viewers who can overlook the lack of originality and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
