G.K. Chesterton's beloved sleuth, Father Brown, is well played here by Kenneth More, but these bare-bones productions border on the skeletal. The crimes the good priest solves could be great whodunits, but the treatment they receive is so sketchy that the mysteries fell flat. The settings are constricted, the flow of the action is stilted and contains uncomfortable gaps, and some of the English dialog might as well be spoken in a foreign tongue given the actors' broad accents. Closed-captioning would have helped While Father Brown is delightful, the stories exhibit little character development, with viewers experiencing merely two-dimensional stereotypes. The set includes all 13 episodes from the 1970s series, but it should not be mistaken for the newly produced collection broadcast in 2013 and 2014, with more episodes coming in 2015.
