This genial, mildly comic flick by filmmaker Jeffcoat (Outsourced) tells the fictional story of real-life Seattle-based indie-pop band Tennis Pro's desperate, last-ditch trip to Japan to find the fame that has eluded them back home. Lured to Tokyo by their sketchy and possibly unreliable new manager (Seattle grunge veteran Alex Vincent, whose understated acting and dry humor are a highlight), the likable trio romp their way around the Tokyo underground rock scene, making friends, seeing the sights, learning the culture and cuisine, missing their loved ones, and struggling to find good gigs. The cinematography is clever, unique, and often beautiful, and band members and amateur actors David Drury, Sean Lowry, and Phillip Peterson are charming and fun to watch, but the plot turns are predictable, too many culture-clash jokes fall flat, and the thankfully few stabs at drama are egregiously contrived. VERDICT While far from perfect, this breezy, lightweight film is both a fine showcase for Tennis Pro's breezy, lightweight tunes and is passable entertainment for indie-rock fans and admirers of the similar but much funnier Flight of the Conchords- Douglas King, Univ. of South Carolina Lib., Columbia.
