Classical economics makes the assumption that consumers are rational. However, there are several social factors that have an economic impact. Only recently have we developed models that blend economics and social science. In this four-volume work, Wherry (sociology, Yale Univ.) and Schor (sociology, Boston Coll.) examine social science topics through an economic lens, focusing not on analytical theories but on broader concepts. Because the discussion is more general, the text is particularly relevant and accessible. Given the wide-ranging scope of this encyclopedia, it necessarily omits entries that some readers may feel are essential and includes others that seem less poignant. Nevertheless, the articles are generally effective and applicable, making a potentially difficult topic comprehensible. As entries are written by several different authors, the style varies. However, the summaries are heavily cross-referenced, and list readily available sources (mostly print and digital references). Fortunately these references have minimized listing academic papers that may be out of reach for some general readers. VERDICT An excellent addition. Recommended for high school and college students looking for a sociological take on economics.
