In Blake Crouch's fantastically conceived yet utterly persuasive Dark Matter, contented family man Jason Dessen is walking home from a friend's celebratory bar meet-up when he's abducted. He awakens in a laboratory where everyone reveres him, yet things are decidedly off; his wife, for instance, is a long-ago girlfriend and his son was never born. In fact, Jason has been dragged into an alternate universe, and it soon transpires that many millions of such universes exist in a way that physicists can easily understand and Crouch's readers will, too.
