In my position as acquisitions manager at the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL), I serve as the main point of contact for self-published authors hoping to be included in our collection. Oftentimes when I speak with them, the conversation turns from the consideration of their book to the challenges of the industry in general. They ask for advice on things outside my area of expertise-finding an editor, choosing a print-on-demand service, or getting their title reviewed. Talking to these writers made me realize just how much hard work and know-how is required to make it in self-publishing. As a result, LAPL saw an opportunity to become more actively involved in supporting local authors and hopefully delivering some tools to help them prosper.
