Synths, android robots used throughout the world in occupations of varying complexity at every level of society, are not intended to gain autonomous consciousness. Nevertheless, a small number of synths are developing sentience and searching out their place in the universe. There is a clandestine organization investigating the synths to contain these sparks of independent thought before they expand. Mia (Gemma Chan), one of the earliest synths with developed consciousness, hides this awareness to avoid detection, while Niska (Emily Berrington) is captured and psychoanalyzed.
