FEEDBACK

I read the letter from Angela Eck ("Job vs. family," Feedback, LJ 12/17, p. 12), and I wanted to encourage her not to let challenges hold her back. She mentioned that she is hesitant to become a director because she would be forced to choose between caring for her family and her job. I have been a very successful library director for over 25 years... all over the county, and I am the proud mother of four grown children and a wife of 37 years.... I just knew that I could work out the details and that the main things were to be happy at work and happy at home. My kids turned out great (one is a librarian), and I never felt that I had to make hard choices. We had to be organized and not be afraid to take on new challenges. In my work building and renovating libraries, we moved to seven states (...paid for by the libraries), and as adults my children are very open to all types of places and people. A big part of being a successful library director is that you have to be ready to handle anything that can come up and use that same principle at home....You can make this work!
