Highland Park is one of Dallas's older and tonier neighborhoods. At the beginning of the 20th century, Wilbur David Cook, the landscape designer best known for planning Beverly Hills, California, and George E. Kessler laid out wide streets that seem to lollygag through the area. And it is no surprise to learn that the television series Dallas was set there-soap opera drama acted out within stately homes shaded by mature, leafy trees. However, it's not the first place you'd expect a modern landscape design steeped in sustain-ability for the long term. David Hocker, ASLA, is changing that. His design for the pool house garden grew out of a careful analysis of the site conditions and a close collaboration between his firm, Hocker Design Group, the architect Gary Cunningham, and the clients, Dana and Charles Nearburg.
