When Richard Neutra's Cyclorama Building at Gettysburg National Military Park was demolished in 2013, some felt triumph, others defeat, but almost no one gave a second thought to the parking lot "There was a whole landscape associated with that Cydorama center," says Shaun Eyring, the chief of cultural resources for the Northeast Region of the National Park Service. "There was an intention there." In photos, the landscaped parking lot, which was added when the visitor center was built in 1962, is pleasantly parklike, with dozens of mature trees. "But it was a lot of asphalt, and it's on top of the battlefield, so it's really hard to say, 'Oh, but it's a significant design so you have to keep it,'" Eyring says. "It's a hard argument to make."
