Drawing on his own extensive park system planning experience in Florida and elsewhere, Barth, a land-scape architect and planner, provides a road map for how communities can build what he calls "High Per-formance Public Spaces"-sites that generate economic, environmental, and public health benefits for com-munities. Although Barth tends to gloss over some of the broader socio-economic impacts associated with new park development-in Barth's system, revenue generation and in-creases in property values are given equal weight to social and public health benefits-social issues such as affordable housing are introduced, if somewhat obliquely. Overall, the book's highly detailed, methodical ap-proach to creating a more integrated planning approach makes it a true how-to guide for professionals and public officials alike.
