Three chemically different materials with a β-alumina type structure (P6_3mmc) were prepared: Ba_0.83Al_11O_17.33 (defect type structure), BaMgAl_10O_17, and a novel material BaAl_11O_16N. Tghese Materials were characterised by X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Dense ceramics were prepared from these materials be hot-pressing. The Influence of the chemical composition (defect chemistry) and microstructure was studied on Thermal, optical, and mechanical properties.
