CHAPTER 2: Performance and Applications of CVD Thin Film Diamond Coated Tools

This chapter is aimed to give a status summary in the development and performance of thin film diamond coated tools. Machining results from extensive testing done mainly on the 390 Aluminium workpiece material are presented. Cutting data from other sources and applications have also been surveyed and reported here. The various tool failure modes, current capabilities/limitations, and desirable film attributes of this latest tooling technology will be discussed. The paper will capture some of the economic drivers, manufacturing trends, and market projections of this new thin film diamond tooling industry. Finally, important areas for further research and development of CVD diamond coated tools will be summarized.
