Preparation of Microporous Material from Cordierite by Acid Treatment

Amaterial with large surface area was prepared from cord ierite (high-temperature polymorph, indialite) by 1M hydrochlor ic acid treatment. The obtained mater ial was judged Type 1 contain ing micropore by nitrogen isotherm. After acid treatment, both Mg and Al were mainly leached out from cordierite structure in the same molar ratio. The leached amount of Mg (and hence Al) was proportional to an increase in specific surface area, and also to a decrease in XRD intensity of cordierite phase. Pore size distributionof this mater ial ranged from 0.4 to 0.9 nm in radius, which was apparently smaller than that of si1ica gel ,and rather comparable to those of the molecular sieves (13X, 5A). While, heats of adsorption of H_2O and NH_3 on this material were 54.8 and 56.5 kJ/mol, respectively. which were approximately the same as those of silica gel. Therefore, this material is considered tobe a weak solidac id. A simple adsorption test in liquid phase revealed that this mater ial eminently adsorbed some of amine compounds.
