The wear property of polyethylene-on-ceramic sliding pairs for joint prostheses was evaluated quantitatively and compared with polyethylene-on-metal sliding pairs. The multidirectional sliding wear test with a newly developed pin-on-plate test apparatus was used in this study as a new screening method for the tribological investigation of prosthetic joint materials. In this method, the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMEPR) pin specimen was moved along the two-dimensional sliding pathway to simulate the multidirectional sliding motion of joint prostheses and to reproduce the clinically relevant wear behavior of UHMWPR.
