In order to determine the effect of different starting hemihydrate (Plaster o Paris) material on the life of gypsum moulds, microstructure of two different Plaster of Paris and gypsum moulds have been characterised using X-ray diffraction ,thermogravimetry and a scanning electron microscopy attached with an energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer. Both the gypsum moulds are immersed into a deflocculant (Na_2SiO_3) containing solution to determine the possible interactions between the moulds and the Na_2SiO_3 containing slip casting slurry.
