We have studied the slip casting of binary systems consisting of Al_2O_3 and SiC ceramic powders. The uniformity of ceramic powder mixtures and slip cast systems in the green and sintered states were quantified with color measurements of L, a~* and b~*. Our results show that the a~* and b~* parameters varied widely from samples consisting of pure Al_2O_3 that were white and pure SiC that were black. Intimate mixing of the ceramic powders, such as obtained in a high energy planetary ball mill, was important to produce homogeneous green and sintered compacts.
