Review the studies on mechanism for vibratory metal machining, put forward further the hypothesis of the chip formation, and analyze theoretically the stress wave propagations in the deformation zones in one- and two-dimensional stress state, respectively. Comparison investigations are made between vibratory machining of low frequency and conventional machining with metallurgical and SEM observations. The main factors influencing the crack creation and its development, leading to the chip formation, are carried out with shock load. Both the current investigation and theoretic study have partially proven the correctness of the stress wave hypothesis presented by the author.
