The present study was undertaken to elucidate the effects of segment design and machining parameters on the performance of diamond impregnated tools in the cutting of granite blocks with many pieces of saw-blades. The sintering quality of iron-based bond matrix, the disparity of diamond strength, and the geometrical shape of worn diamond segments are addressed while attempting to optimize the design of diamond segments for multi-blade sawing. The effects of machining parameters and cutting fluids are discussed both from the aspects of optimizing the load on each diamond grain and speeding up the ejection of chip slurries. Through incorporating such techniques as coating of diamond with clad, re-separation of market available diamond particles, and rare earth modification of iron-based bond matrix into the fabrication of diamond segments, the multi-blade sawing was improved together with an optimal selection of machining parameters.
