A Study on the CBN Grit Damage of a Newly Developed CBN Cup Quill in Face Grinding

In order to improve the grinding of groove bottom, we developed a new CBN cup quill. In the development of the new CBN cup quill, a new technology is applied so that CBN grits are packed, covered, and fixed with highly intensified brazed metal layer. Based on the new CBN cup quill, an experimental study has been carried out to evaluate the performance parameters of the newly developed device, such as chip shapes, grinding force, roughness of grinding surface, and CBN grits damage. It is found that, for face grinding with the new type CBN cup quills, the grinding force initially increases and then decreases rapidly. It does not increase with the increasing of the cumulative CBN cup quill grinding length. In the grinding process, the flank of the effective CBN grits was worn initially and then the grits were broken, and chipping of the CBN grits follows. This process results in the reduction of the protrusion height of effective grits and a cycle, in which the grits are worn initially then sharp again. Finally, the protrusion height of effective grits reduces to a value, so that the grinding force cannot meet the demand.
