The effect of 0, 5μM, 10μM, 20μM and 50μM Orthosilicic acid on collagen type Ⅰ gene expression in cultured human trabecular bone-derived osteoblasts was investigated. Collagen type Ⅰ messenger RNA (mRNA) was quantified using real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). After 20 hours incubation a significant increase in collagen type Ⅰ mRNA was seen in cells cultured with 5μM, 10μM and 50μM Orthosilicic acid (p<0.05) compared to untreated controls. This study suggests that silicon has a stimulatory effect on collagen type Ⅰ mRNA in human osteoblasts.
