Gauvin Bailey's book is both traditional and polemical. Its subject, a group of distinctively ornamented colonial-period Catholic churches in southern Peru and Bolivia, has been studied by scholars for nearly a century, and this survey of them features highly detailed descriptions accompanied by histories of their construction and decoration.
