Understanding the transport characteristics of single molecules bonded between metal electrodes is of fundamental importance for molecular scale electronics. It is well-known that these characteristics are influenced by intrinsic molecular properties such as their length, conformation, gap between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, and the alignment of this gap to the metal Fermi level.
