Excellent article. For the sake of accuracy, however, one should mention that Second Life has its quirks, and after a decade it still pretty much feels like a beta product, but OpenSim is far worse-early alpha, at best. Still, for academics and teachers, when choosing between a very cheap solution that does not place restrictions on content or visitors but has stability and performance problems, and an insanely high-cost solution that places a lot of restrictions on users and is not without some performance issues, the best choice, in this financially challenged climate, might become rather obvious.
