摘要

This paper outlines a theory of the coupling of two vibrational modes of floating bodies. Model equations of motion are used to investigate the possibility of a resonance between the two main planar modes: vertical oscillations (heave) and cross-sectional rotations about the centre of gravity (roll). This resonance would not be amenable to a more standard approach, in which heave is considered to follow the roll. Theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical results. Interesting behaviour, such as jumps in the roll amplitude and a hystcrctic effect, follow from both treatments.
