Editorial of the special issue to celebrate the 35th anniversary of JSS

This special issue is dedicated to celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Journal of Systems and Software. Authors of the top ten most cited papers among those published in JSS each year between 2009 and 2013 were invited to submit their top-quality papers for possible publication in this special issue. In this way, the potential advantage of those appearing earlier over recently published papers was eliminated. In addition, a few well-recognized scholars in the systems and software area, who might not publish often in JSS, were invited. Each submission was reviewed by at least two independent reviewers and met the standards set by the journal before acceptance.
