The old adage 'ignorance is bliss' might strike a chord with anyone who has been introduced to the world of copyright. Copyright is a complex, largely impenetrable and worryingly legalistic area of study. Yet ignorance and complacency have no place in dealing with these issues, a fact which Tim Padfield makes all too clear in his pragmatic conclusion to the preface to this third edition of his work: 'If in doubt, consult a lawyer' (author's emphasis).
