Dr William Lind (1931-2006)

The world of Scottish business and technical archives is much the poorer for the passing of Dr William Lind, one of the most singular figures in the field. He was 76. Bill Lind (also known, at least behind his back, as Uncle Bill) was not an archivist himself, as he was always quick to point out, but his multifarious business background-training as a shipwright in Lamont's yard in Port Glasgow, followed by pursuit of the family business as a quarrymaster, then in road haulage, together with an omnivorous interest in all aspects of Scotland's industry-gave him a unique insight into the records of that industry, with which he became increasingly absorbed, particularly after he sold up his commercial interests.
