Government information essentials

This book attempts to address the essential skills and knowledge needed for individuals who work with government documents which, in either paper or electronic format, are described as 'a rich and varied resource.' Split into five parts and containing 17 chapters (with each chapter written by a different author) the book aims to capture the expertise and experience of government information professionals and, it claims, address issues possibly not dealt with in other sources. All the chapter authors have held (or currently hold) library positions. Therefore the book naturally gravitates towards supporting those primarily in the library profession as opposed to records or information managers who work within government. Also, the content tends to be focused more on the American system of administration, with government information being defined in the book as 'any material created by local, state, federal or international government, government agencies or intergovernmental organisations.' However, that does not mean that certain aspects are not relevant to other government records and information professionals working in other countries.
