JSBM Special Issue Call For Papers 'Social Entrepreneurship that Matters'

JSBM is announcing a special issue devoted to the study of a new small and medium business model labeled "social entrepreneurship". This model is still in the process of development so no general or consensual definition exists that would accommodate all of the varied definitions and approaches. The microfinance organization model, founded by Nobel Prize winner Mohammed Yunis is perhaps the most frequently-cited example of social entrepreneurship. By making many very small loans at very low interest rates to individual small business entrepreneurs embedded in a system of social support that encourages repayment, Yunis' Grameen Bank has been able to expand greatly the extent of small business development-and success, increasing its "portfolio" of loans and thus its ability to make more loans while obtaining income adequate to sustain the bank's operating expenses. The social entrepreneurship model does not rely on donations and does not offer charity. The model is exemplified by the old saw, "Doing well by doing good".
